The Karlovy Vary Region is the smallest region of the Czech Republic. Its inhabitants are among those who earn the least and achieved the lowest levels of education in comparison with the national average. There is a considerable level of unemployment in the region, owing to the closures of several important factories in the past twenty years, in which people used to work for generations. The social situation of the middle class keeps deteriorating, and poor people often end up in newly emerging ghettos.
People in Need have been working in the Karlovy Vary Region since 2001, initially concentrating on providing field social work. Subsequently, the range of services offered was expanded to include further support programmes for socially excluded individuals and families. In 2006, an independent regional branch was created in the town of Sokolov in order to coordinate activities of social workers operating in other cities, towns, and villages of the region. At first, these localities included the municipalities of Oloví, Rotava, and Karlovy Vary, and later also Chodov and its surroundings, or Ostrov, Jáchymov and Nejdek.
One by one, contact centres were being established in those localities to improve support services to the people afflicted with all sorts of social problems that make everyday life difficult. The contact centres allow People in Need’s workers to stay in regular contact with their clients and also with local and central authorities. In addition to regular field social work, the centres are also used to provide free employment counselling service and advice on issues such as debts, inadequate housing, and compulsory education. Other services provided include coordination of leisure activities for children and the youth, free social and legal counselling, referrals to other suitable social services, and careers guidance for schoolchildren in primary education.
The Sokolov office of People in Need cooperates with municipal councils in the communities it serves and with the Regional Council of the Karlovy Vary Region. Its operation is funded by subsidies from the EU funds such as the European Social Fund’s Education for Competitiveness Operational Programme (ECOP), or a Karlovy Vary Region’s individual project.
