Livelihoods & Food Security
Sri Lanka in brief
|Capital:||Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte (official and legislature)|
Long and protracted conflict between Tamil Tigers and the Government of Sri Lanka left the target areas of People in Need in a desolate state. Overall, the problematic situation had strongly negative influence on the food security in the region.
In addition to the already difficult situation, the returning families had to go through numerous distressful experiences such as multiple displacements and stays in IDP camps. Many have lost their family members. The absence of livelihood opportunities and basic social services as well as, in many areas, the danger of landmines and unexploded ordnance, made the people particularly vulnerable. People in Need not only reacted to the immediate humanitarian needs of the returnees but above all assisted them in returning to the normal and dignified life, recovering their original livelihoods or finding alternative means to feed their families.
