The Democratic Republic of the Congo
DR Congo in brief
|Population:||70.9 mil. (The World Factbook, 2010)|
Despite its wealth of natural resources, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country with among the highest number of people living below the poverty line of all countries. Political instability and a poor state of security hinders development of infrastructure, healthcare, education and other sectors in this, the second largest country in Africa.
People in Need (PIN) has been working in the DRC since 2008. In far-flung rural areas of the eastern province of South Kivu, we are assisting in reducing malnutrition in children under the age of five and in women of child-bearing age. We encourage prevention inside communities as well as necessary treatment in healthcare centres. Prevention also involves varying their diet by growing their own crops, reducing food scarcity and improving hygiene conditions for the most vulnerable households. We also help the local people to increase awareness of their rights and improve access to justice for disadvantaged Congolese people to enable them to influence and change their living conditions to make their country a dignified place for life once again.
