People in Need About us

About us

Logo People In NeedWe are a non-governmental, non-profit organization based on the ideas of humanism, freedom, equality and solidarity. We consider human dignity and freedom to be the basic values. We believe that people anywhere in the world should have a right to make decisions about their lives and to share the rights expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We strive for open, informed, engaged and responsible society that would be able to address problems at home as well as in the world. We want to actively participate in shaping a society where cultural, ethnic, racial and other differences are a source of enrichment rather than conflict.

We are an intrinsic part of the civil society. Our work is based not only on personal initiative and activity of hundreds of our employees and volunteers, both in the Czech Republic and in dozens of other countries, where we work, but also on trust and support we are endowed with by individuals, businesses, governments and international institutions.

The scope of our activities, particular areas and priorities are determined independently with respect to the level of urgency and to our real capacity to change something. It is not so important to have the work done everywhere, however it is essential for us to make a real difference.

Over 33,000 refugees fled violence in DR Congo to Angola. People in Need helps with water, sanitation and hygiene

September 4, 2017

Dundo (4th September 2017) – Violence and ethnic tensions in the Kasai Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has forced over 33,000 Congolese to seek safety in Angola's Lunda Norte Province since April this year. Refugees coming from DRC are reporting serious fighting, sexual and human rights abuses and a shortage of basic items. People in Need (PIN) with it's 11 years experience in Angola currently implementing WASH, nutrition, education, agriculture, health and civil society programmes in three Angolan provinces immediately decided to respond to emerging humanitarian crisis in the North of the country. PIN released 37,000 EUR from PIN Club of Friends emergency fund and have sent two aid workers to affected area. People in Need together with UNICEF will help 7,200 people with water, sanitation and hygiene in coming months.

Prague (15th August 2017) – While millions of people flee war-torn countries trying to find safe havens for themselves and their families, a far larger number of them are forced to remain, despite the continued fighting, and they often fall victim to the attacks. According to UN data, more than 32,000 civilians were killed or injured by explosive weapons in armed conflicts in 2016. In 90 per cent of these cases, the attacks happened in populated civilian areas. People who were lucky enough to survive were forced to leave their homes. In 2016, 65.6 million people around the world were forced from home by armed conflict. Of these, 40,3 million were people internally displaced. And this number is growing.

Venezuela faces an escalation of violence. There is a grave shortage of basic food and medicine; popular protests are being brutally suppressed

August 9, 2017

Venezuela used to be the richest country in South America. Today, over 80% of the population lives beyond the poverty line. The situation got substantially worse during the rule of President Nicolás Maduro, with symptoms such as high inflation and shortages of food and medicine. The regime's decisions led to an escalation of the crisis. The opposition and others who call for bringing the regime to justice are being silenced and detained.

630,000 people have been affected as a result of floods in Sri Lanka. People in Need and their partners have been helping the most vulnerable to restore their livelihoods and clean water sources

July 24, 2017

Prague, Colombo (24th July 2017) Floods and landslides triggered by heavy torrential rains in Sri Lanka at the end of May have destroyed 2,500 houses and partially damaged almost 16,000 houses. These floods, worst since 2003, have affected as many as 630,000 people, of which one third are children. 15 out of Sri Lanka`s 25 districts have been afflicted; its southwestern districts of Galle, Kaluthara, Matara and Ratnapura have been hit the hardest. Thanks to the resources from the People in Need Club of Friends and the humanitarian fund of Alliance2015, People in Need (PIN) together with its partner organizations from Aliance2015, ACTED and HELVETAS, were one of the first to start providing assistance in one of the most afflicted districts – in Ratnapura. We help restore water sources; we provide small financial grants to local inhabitants so they can rebuild their livelihoods. They can also earn some extra money clearing-up after the floods, as a form of community service.

Remembering Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas, the famous Cuban dissident who died 5 years ago under suspicious circumstances

July 22, 2017

On the 22nd of July, we mark 5 years since the death of Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas, the dissident and activist who died in a car crash in the province of Granma in Eastern Cuba in 2012. On Cuba, he called for non-violent resistance against the authoritarian communist regime; he demanded the government to secure basic human and civil rights and freedoms for its citizens. Further victim of the accident was Harold Cepero, another Cuban activist who was in the car with Payá.
